Intel Joule Dev Board with Microsoft Windows 10 IoT Core

Compare to Arduino, Raspberry Pi dev kit, Intel doesn’t seem to be well accepted by the maker communities. But this doesn’t stop Intel from trying making dev board for enthusiasts. Back to the day where Intel has their Intel Galileo Board till credit card size Edison board, by far Intel Joule is the most powerful dev board that Intel have introduced.

Intel introduced their latest and yet most powerful dev board Intel Joule in August 2016, and soon will be available thru its global distribution channels. Intel Joule come in two versions: Intel Joule 570X and 550X, but only Intel 570X are available at the moment.

Let’s look at the Intel Joule 570X specification
  • CPU: 64-bit Quad-core Intel Atom @ 1.7 Ghz (with burst up to 2.4 Ghz)
  • Memory: 4Gb PoP LPDDR4 RAM
  • Storage: 16 GB eMMC 5.0 Flash
  • Networking: Wifi 802.11 ac, and Bluetooth 4.1
  • Graphics: Intel HD Graphics with 4K video support
  • BIOS: UEFI
  • Others: USB 3.0, MPI CSI and DSI interfaces, multiple GPIO, I2C, UART interfaces
  • OS: Microsoft Windows 10 IoT Core and Linux

Raspberry Pi2/3 maybe the most popular dev board, but Intel Joule 570X is by far the most powerful dev board in the market, but it also come with a hefty price tag compare to Raspberry Pi3 at USD35. The expected SRP for Intel Joule 570X is USD369.

There are no news for the junior version of 570X, the Intel Joule 550X which the processor is clocked at 1.5GHz, 3Gb memory and 8Gb of Flash storage.

Microsoft operating system been run well on Intel x86 architecture, as for the result, Windows 10 IoT core also available for Intel Joule Dev board.
